Is this the factory diagnostic system?

On Ebay

It's the second time it is listed without any bids. How much are they new? Seems too pricy for anyone but dedicated Volvo shops.

Yeah, way over-priced. You are buying the laptop too...incredible. Looks like a Thinkpad 600 but I can't be sure (about $300 in good shape) but he doesn't say. Many have the VADIS disc (cheap on eBay), and I would suspect the connector cable is nothing fancy. Can buy this on eBay too. What you're really paying for is the VCT2000 module. I've seen it however for about about half of the price listed here. Also, to get the newest info, you would have to have a subscription to Volvo's on-line diagnostic service....doesn't mention that here either. No one will bid on this at that price.

I do have the DVD but that's only half the battle for figuring out a malfunction. You still need a way to scan the Volvo modules and sensors and my generic OBDII tester doesn't cut it.

Then you'll have to either take it to the dealer or buy the module. I think for the price, when you need to find the specific DTC's that a generic code reader won't read, it is well worth paying the dealer.

There's always this option

I have however seen the Volvo Scan Tool on eBay for about a grand. If you really really feel you have to have one, then just keep your eyes open and be patient and you'll find one for about that. Otherwise, learn to live without one.

Which OBD-II reader do you have anyway? I can read most codes except the ABS, SRS and ECC (maybe a few other peripherals). Really what matters in terms of keeping our cars from blowing up is reading the ignition, engine and transmission codes. These can be read with a good generic code like my Equus Innova 3100 (can read my wife's '04 V70 codes too). All you have to do after reading them is cross reference them to Volvo's codes. It's worked for me so far.

I have an old Actron scanner that I'm using on a '99 C70 with a transmission in limp home mode. Sure it can read the codes, P0758 for a shift solenoid, and P1618 for communications problem between modules, but thats it. It can't activate a solenoid for example like the sophisticated scanners do.

The Volvo Scan tool CANNOT activate sensors either, although with VIDAS (for older models '98 and older) and VIDA (newer cars), it can do sofware downloads and upgrades. The VCT system is really only for "reading" diagnostics.

Wish we could read it...but it's in Portuguese. Maybe you can cross-post the pertinent threads here that are pertinent to what's being discussed here?
