Volvo 940 Paint

Post by TheSandman »

Hi everyone! :D Long time reader, first time poster.

I own a white Volvo 940 and I've recently started looking at the type of paint it has. My paint code is 189-21 and from what I can gather from here: https://www.volvoclub.org.uk/paint_colour_codes.shtml , my car has a solvent based paint without any clear coat. I'm not too sure if I am correct on assuming this, but if I am reading that chart correctly, then is it bad that I have been waxing the car for a couple years now. I have been using maguires tech wax or maguires wet look for about 4 years now.

Last time I washed my car (which was about 6 months ago), I had all this white powdery stuff come off the paint, and the cloth had this white stuff on it. Since the paint seemed fine, I assumed that it was the wax powdering up and coming off due to the harsh Aussie summers. Now I am worried that I might've damaged the paint by waxing it without it having a clear coat.

What steps should I take to wax and/or protect my finish from the weather since I don't have a clear coat? I have googled this but I can't seem to be getting any clear answers for Volvos.

Thanks alot.

You are not waxing it enough if you are gettig oxidation. That is what that white stuff likely is. Back when i had the 740, and 960 they got waxed quarterly to keep a deep finish and proper protection. It is clear coat paint that does not require all the wax for finish protection. June

Sorry for the late reply, was tied up. Thanks for your response June. Yeah I had a closer look and it does look like oxidation. I am planning on giving it a proper wash and polishing it this coming week, should I be using any special products now that oxidation has started or will a good polish remedy the problem? The paint still seems to be in good shape, so I think the oxidation hasn't developed to a bad stage yet.

Use a wax labeled "cleaner wax" the first time then just keep it up and that won't happen again. Back then and even now I use a product called Astro Shield which is a liquid polish that soap like Dawn detergent won't wash off like wax does. The first coat is left on for a short period of time than a second coat is applied on top of it than buffed off. Back when i married my husband he had a 1985 Corvette and this product was the only product recommended by Chevrolet for the Corvette finish. He has used it every since and it works well. It has gotten harder to find in recent years, but I'm sure one of the automotive chains still carries it. Back then it was sold in the Chevrolet parts department. Maguire yellow wax is also a nice product from what I've seen. June

Ok I'll check out my local auto store and see what they have. Can't wait to get it all done, detailing has been long overdue. Thanks June!

My dad used to use Kit liquid car wax. The brand name is now Formula 1. He used to mix rubbing compound with the kit wax.

I did forget to mention if you use Astro Shield the first coat seems to soak in/ fade durring the time left on and the second coat is applied on top of the first coat and is easy to wipe/ hand buff off. Just read the instructions for how long to leave the first coat on, and of course never polish/ wax in direct sunlight. Ju e

They don't have the Astro Shield at my local store, so I searched around for any replacements I could use, I did come across this: http://www.meguiars.com.au/mirror-glaze/showcar-glaze/ which looks like it was designed to rejuvenate single stage paint. I am hoping to go pick some up tomorrow and to try it over the weekend. Have you had any experience with this product?

Also, Lummert I couldn't find any of the Formula 1 brand stuff at my local store either.
