960 gas cap problem

tried to remove my gas cap tonight and it wouldn't come off. it just turned freely in each direction. no ratcheting. how can I remove it? what broke?

1. Try pulling up on the cap as your rotate it.
2. Try pushing down as you rotate the cap.
3. With a pair of channel locks squeeze till it is a little oval in shape, then turn.
4. Break the cap off with the channel locks, then work the threaded part out.

Replace with the new cap you just bought.
