98 V70 po455 questions

Post by wlkstout »

Hello all. I am new here and have a couple questions. I just bought a 98 V70 na, 179,821miles, on Saturday 1/6/18 and it has some codes that i am working on. It has the po455, po410, po500, po131, and po141. Car runs well, no real driveability issues. I have been reading a lot of your posts and volvospeeds about the codes.

I am working on the po455 at the moment. I traced the hoses and elbows and they all seam ok visually. I did not put any vacuum to them, don't have a vacuum puller yet. I pulled the plastic connector, small line that runs to the front, at the charcoal canister and it did not have any o-ring in it. As not having any vacuum elbows handy, i did not cut the connector off of the j-tube hose so i replaced the o-ring with a fuel filter o-ring. It seamed tight, so i will give that a shot for now.

Now while i was under the car i turned it on and could here air being drawn into the j-tube, good sign i guess. And i heard air also being drawn into the fuel pressure regulator. Is that normal? I checked all the hoses going to it and it sounds like the air is coming from the crimped/rolled part of the body of the regulator. Thought about sealing the crimped part around the body with rtv sealant but wasn't sure. But like i said it starts and drives pretty well.

Also the purge valve at the radiator is the PIERBURG 9125243 square type. From what i have read i thought the round type is what is supposed to be present but i am not sure. I did take it out and could not blow thru it. Yesterday after i changed the oil, it was engaging as i thought it had an exhaust leak it was so loud. I could hear it from 4 feet away from the car. Should i replace it?
I rest the codes to see if the o-ring helps and had to call it a day as the sleet and snow are starting to come down and i have no garage.
Thank you for your help. And sorry about the winded post.

Where is your carbon filter mounted? They can be either under the front LH fender forward of the front wheel or at the rear under the floor parallel with the fuel filter and rear RH wheel.

Typically the issues are the 'J' hose and what I call the 'L' hoses that run to the carbon filter or out of the roll over valve pipe to the vent valve near the fuel filler. Many people look at these pipes and say they look fine (me included) only to find they are perished and split.

These are the first 2 places to check thoroughly.

Don't spend forever trying to find your leak like I did. I ended up taking my 98 S70 to a shop for a smoke test. It took them 10 minutes to find it and fix....$50.

The filter is in the rear of the car. I will look at those two hoses again tomorrow when i check the rollover valve. Thanks.

L and J tube strike again. Found them at the vent valve and charcoal canister.

Let us know if it removes the issue. Hopefully these were the issue.

So far so good, no reoccurring issues. Have replaced both 02 sensors, plugs, wires, dist. cap & rotor, Ign coil, timing belt, 2nd air pump check valve and today I replaced the air pump with a good used one. Still working on the trans fluid changes and going to do some short oil changes to clean it up motor some. Have a right sided CV to replace and maybe do the front struts this Spring but all and all this is shaping up to be a nice vehicle.
