Hi there please I need help I recently bought a volvo C70 1999 2.5t I bought it as a non runner the car started but the timing was off and ran but smoked white smoke due to the timing .I took the head off and found that some valves were bent on the intake and the exhaust I sent the head in and got it sorted.

Once I had put the head back on and started to do the timing I lined the timing on the marks on the cams and locked them in place the on the marks I had made before taking it off and ensured the crankshaft mark and cams were all in place .

Now I did the normal procedures of turning the crank
By had and ensured nothing was hitting it was all fine I'm not too sure if the 1 cylinder must be at TDC while the crankshaft and cams are in there line

Please help I'm not sure what to do

The 1999 has variable valve timing, there are additional steps you need to take. See the attached file.

White smoke is NOT because of bad timing....it's because of blown head gasket.

Bad timing can produce Gray smoke but, some people have trouble distinguishing Gray smoke from White smoke. The nose can detect the difference. White Smoke smells sweet, Gray smoke smells of unburned hydrocarbons.

It might have been grey but the smell was that of fuel but the sound of it was the valves hitting the pistons when I took the head off I saw the valve marks on the piston on the exhaust side thanks for the help .

They come out of the factory with valve clearance indents in the top of the pistions . The indents enables the valves to stay open longer. If the indents are machined it is normal. If it is irregular and looks like it was hammered it is valves hitting.
Yet, anytime you pull a head off it is a good time to recondition it, no fowl by sending it it to the machine shop.

It might have been grey but the smell was that of fuel

Fuel is long chains of hydrocarbons .....
