side mirror interchangeability

Post by GoldCO »

My daughter recently broke the passenger side mirror (not the glass, but the internals of the housing).

Went to the local junkyard today and their "parts interchange" website told me that the mirror from a 2001 V70 or 2002 V70XC would be the same as my '05 V70 (T5). Grabbed the V70 mirror but when I got home realized it ain't the same: bigger and different shape.

What should I be looking for?

Thanks in advance.

I don't think it's the same between S60 and XC70 all years included

Within the S60 V70 range, the mirror shape changed somewhere after 2003 or so, not compatible. See how the glass is shaped on your mirror then scroll Ebay items to see which years have the same shape of glass. Mind you, upon purchase, turn the rear window defrost on and check the mirror glass is warming up, these often times go bad

Looks like there are eight different right side mirrors for the 2005 V70 due to options and midyear changes.

You say the 2001 V70 mirror you came home with is bigger and a different shape than your 2005 V70 T5 mirror. I would suggest you came home with an XC mirror. Early P2 XC mirrors are bigger than the same year V70 mirrors. I have a 2001 V70 T5, and I will tell you, it is a small side view mirror. The early S60 mirrors are the same size (I know, I've compared them). I don't know about the 2005 V70 T5 mirrors, but I'd bet it's the same size as mine and many S60 mirrors.

Did you pull the part or did the junkyard bring it to you? If they did it, I'll bet they brought you the XC mirror. If so, return it for an exchange.

Thanks for the replies... wow, 8 different options!

This was a "u-pull-n-pay" yard, so it was my own fault for not being more informed, though I just trusted their "parts interchange" database.

Thanks for the tip about S60 -- they have a few more of those than V70s, so I'll go back this weekend and try again.

The 8 options are irrelevant as fas as glass shape. Within 2005 there is only one glass shape for the V70 and S60, as others suggested. The one thing to pay attention to is the presence or absence of the heating element, see oragex's video. If yours has one then try for a replacement with one, if yours doesn't then no worries get one with or without.

The side mirror options are:
- lighting (puddle light pointing down)
- electric or manual folding
- position memory

No idea how interchangeable these are but if yours is broken, you will need to be careful not to lose features.

I do not see any references to without heat (mirror deicing).

About the position memory, there is a post on another forum about a owner who installed a mirror from another car, he mentioned the mirror glass moves every time he starts the car - maybe a small warning about 'programming' or software compatibility (if there's such thing on these mirrors)
