Heat distribution problems 1998 V70 ECC

Post by frisky99 »

Hello , I have the no defrost and no feet heat . I have read what I could find online, so I removed the bolster and glove box to take a look. I did find the control arm for the main vent (recirculating?) seems to be disconnected or loose at the motor end. When I close the vent manually it doesn't effect the distribution so I assume it is the recirculation motor . Looks like I have multiple problems under there. How should I proceed from here ? Attached image is of the loose control arm and vent.
Thank you , frisky 1998 V70 Automatic climate control

Search through my old posts while troubleshooting my ECC issues.
My understanding is that the system is designed to default to defrost.

I think the 98 is the same as my 00 models. I can't quite orientate what or where the picture is take and what of. Is that the cold air intake flap behind the heater fan or where is it?

The main air intake behind the heater fan is used to naturally allow air in or out. When closed, the system is in recirc mode and not allowing cool air to enter the system and that is all it does.

There are 4 servo motors on the later systems with ECC controls including the cold air flap. On the right side of the of the center air outlets and hard to see there is one motor. That one deflects cold air either into the heating system or on to the eater matrix if you want warm air.

There are 2 other servo motors on the LHS of the center console. The most upper on determines which air vent the air goes to. It may be the one causing problem. Lastly the is another one just behind that one which is up on the RHS of the steering column. The last one is further back on the LHS and that one deflects the amount of air getting to the flaps that determine were the air is to go.

Five motors on ECC as noted

That pic is looking up at the recirc door from the footwell, If you are stuck on defrost then probably one/both of the position motors are bad either in electrical or linkage.

Do the ECC control unit LEDs flash about 10-25 seconds after start? Those codes will tell you more about what is faulty

Thanks for the replies. No flashing lights on start up yet I do remember them awhile back . I will see if I can trigger the lights and count the flashes . Drove the car last night and now this morning I have the ABS and tracs lights on . Oh well , unheated garage and single digits will slow me down . I will post again when I make some progress , frisky

I’ve forgotten if the later control module supports flashes , of course a good scanner will retrieve past and pending codes
