2010 V50 3rd Brake Light

Post by PDXV50 »

I recently acquired a lovely 2010 non-turbo V50 (after my '99 V70 took her last breath at 265k miles :( ). After the inspection results came back I was told that the center brake light was dim and 2 bulbs were out. My question is; can I replace the burned out bulbs myself or does the entire assembly need to be replaced? Is this something a layperson can do or do I have to take it into a shop? The $170 quoted by the shop seems steep and I routinely did this sort of thing on my V70 myself. Any guidance would be appreciated.

I have a spare from a 2006 V50. It is an assembly with a socket for a connector on back. Part# 9151490. On the front is a clear plastic insert that fronts the illumination. That plastic strip snaps in and is the only apparent way to get inside. It is not apparent to me that it can be removed without breaking something. IIRC, replacing the unit requires removing some of the tailgate trim.

EDIT: I think I have mis-labeled that spare part. I looked up the part # and it appears to be from a P80 V70. I'll poke around a bit more. I think I have one from aV50.
Les is more.
