Volvo 850 door check question

Post by henrysin44 »

The driver door to my 850 is starting to make a horrible creeking sound when opening and closing. I tracked it down to the door check, it hasn't done any damage to the door or the piller (read it could crack the frame). I don't want to have to be welding anything by leaving it on, so would it be safe to just unbolt the check at the piller until i have free time in a few weeks to replace it? I get that with it unbolted the door wont hold itself from closing which i can live with but with it unbolted would it challenge the integrity of the top and bottom door mounts?

As long as the door isn't allowed to swing all the way open and slam all that weight onto the hunger, what you propose should be no problem at all.

My bolts broke a long time ago. Just have to watch out for those strong wind gusts.

The door checks for the 850 are the same for left and right. That might save you some anxiety when trying to order a new one. The spring which makes the check actually work is longer on one side than the other so: short side up=left; long side up=right. The one I bought had an "R" stamped on the arm. Also, put a zip tie on the floppy part that goes through the door and fish it through the hole, it's easier to maneuver the door check having something to hang on to rather than try to grab it while it's inside the door.

Not sure if I should start a new topic but this just happened to my 99 V70. Don't recall any warning creaks. Both bolts cracked the frame. Super bummed about it. 😟 Is it repairable? Auto body shop?

If you don't weld and don't know someone who can, then a body shop is your only option for a weld repair. Check the check strap is not seized and that is the reason for it tearing the metal.

I fixed this with a self-tapping screw. Easy fix and it held up for years.

Remove door, hold check strap in correct position with left hand, drill holes thru pillar and check strap mount with right hand, grease to prevent rust, drive in screws, reinstall door.

Super common problem that has been fixed many different ways. Search button is your friend!

I fix them by a method similar to what j-dawg did; here's a write-up with lots of pictures: viewtopic.php?p=586924

I do not weld.

Amazing detailed descriptions and pics in those links!! Unfortunately it looks like the extent of damage is quite a bit worse on mine. Not sure only bolts and a washer would be enough in that case. Not a repair I would expect on a Volvo especially with no rust. But age is a factor. Going to have to shell out the $$. Thanks for all the great posts. I especially appreciate the modified tool hacks. Brilliant : )
