1975 164E

Post by ir637113 »

So I'm in the market for a new car. Saw a guy close to me that is selling a 164E for about $1200. Bought it as a project and never got around to it.

Claims it runs and needs a tune up, brakes, and maybe tires in the near future. Been sitting for 8 months, so there's also that.

Body is almost immaculate, spare a rust stain under the fuel tank.

So here's my question for you guys - I'm an 850 nut, but know nothing about other models. Any big issues to be on the lookout for (outside of normal car issues, anyway)? Any issues with keeping them maintained or finding parts?

I know you basically don't see it ever. I just have no idea what I'd be getting myself into, and if it's a huge hassle, I'd rather avoid it

Just looked at it. Minus needing a new paint job and an interior, it's physically in good shape. Didn't get a test drive because the owner wasn't there and it looks a little deconstructed to drive right now. Will post pictures later today

If you are looking for a daily driver walk away. There are many 850s and V/S70s in our area for the same price. I would consider this 164 a project car.

That's what I ended up doing. Couldn't find an 850, V70, or 960 in my price range, ended up going with a Town and Country. Maybe in a couple years I'll go back, but I'm really digging the difference in how challenging the routine maintenance is between the 850 an the T&C (Seriously, I serviced the PCV on my van while I was changing valve cover gaskets - took me ten minutes. So the whole job would take an hour)

For anyone interested and in the Dayton area or willing to travel, this guy still has it. He was asking $1000 two months ago, so you could probably get this for a steal. If I had $600 and a place to put it, I'd have it sitting at my place right now
