98 850 Wagon - probably scrapping? EDIT: it runs?

Post by ir637113 »

So I've got my trusty 94 850 wagon. Not so trusty anymore. Was driving the other day, noticed my foot had crept up on the gas until it was on the floor and I was losing speed and power. As I was pulling over, my low oil light came on, then all my lights came on and it stalled.

Currently, it won't start, and I can't tell if it happened when it was or cranking, but the few quarts I put in (just enough to have something in there so I could see if it would crank) are currently on the floor of my garage.

So I'm assuming something big, and probably going to get rid of it as a donor/project for someone. My question is - what realistically would cause my engine to dump all of it's oil either while it's sitting or while it's cranking (and I guess it's possible it could've dripped off the engine since the 4.5 quarts I has were dumped on the top of my engine.)

Any help appreciated, but unless it's a minor issue, this thing is going to a new home. It's probably ran 3 of the last 8 months.

Did the engine make any noise prior to this happening ? Knocking, clacking ? A flash light should help looking under/around the engine.
It's the non start condition that is more worrying.

It could've, but who knows. I was pushing the engine pretty hard. The only thing I noticed was it jerked a little like it was surging, and I was still losing power no matter where the pedal was.

It can be that the oil is what spilled out on top when it stalled, but idk right now. I've been debating getting rid of it for awhile now - my "daily driver" has, in the last eight months, been running for 3 or 4, and I've had it towed three times since the new year

As for the starting, it cranks like it wants to try. I got it to turn over twice and it died almost immediately. It's acting like it did a month ago. That turned it to be the coolant temp sensor.

I'm just kind of at a loss, and it's probably mostly because I'm frustrated it's down again.

Given this towing history, if it was me I would have indeed look for something new. It may one day die while driving and get into a less safe situation. Just today mine died on me (my fault) and left with no power anything in traffic, didn't feel safe. Sometimes it's time to let go indeed. But that's just me of course 8)

Kinda my thought. I can't tell that anywhere obvious where oil could be coming from. So it's possible that's all what was just sitting there coming out due to my PCV system.

But yeah, I'm getting something new. I'll worry about scrapping or fixing this thing later

Wouldnt that have made a noise or something? I've never had that happen so idk, but I would think you could hear it.
