S60 R need to replace one tire

The car hit a curb (OK the driver did - but it wasn't me!), and the sidewall split. Hopefully the wheel is OK, looks it to me but we'll see how it balances. The tires on the car are Continental ExtremeContact DWS 06 - SIZE: 235/45ZR17.

The tires are about 1 year old, according to the PO. I've only had the car since the summer. I took a depth gauge to them and the remaining three tires are all a hair under 9/32, pretty uniformly. Tred depth when new is listed at 10/32.

The AWD does NOT work on this car, it is running FWD. However I am thinking of replacing the angle gear (and collar) this summer. I'm leaning towards just replacing the one bad tire, and would love to hear your opinions.

That really is not much difference. I think Haldex was upgraded somewhere in 2006 and is less sensitive to differences in tire wear (overall diameter). But hopefully some R or AWD owner could give a more accurate answer.

Plus, aren't there a few tire shops with a grinding machine just for cases such as these?

Been there done that...

- 2005 XC90 AWD, angle gear sleeve is stripped, I just leave it the way it is, i.e., FWD only.
I have a set of winter tires on separate rims, so not an issue in winter.

- When the tire were 50% worn, one hit the curb and bulged out.

- Got a new tire but put it the REAR as this is a FWD car now.
As a rule, tires on the drive axle (such as a BMW RWD car or a Honda FWD car) should be the same brand, age, an wear depth to avoid damaging the differential.

- In other words, "mismatched tires" should be on the "non-drive axle".

- "Shaving Tire to match" is a complex business, many shops don't do it b/c it adds complexity to the shop. You may be lucky to find one that does it.
