2004 Volvo S40 1.9T remove motor mount stud

Post by tjzboyda » Mon Mar 05, 2018 6:49 pm

Hello all,

I have a 2004 Volvo S40 with the 1.9lT engine. I am trying to replace the TB, water pump and pulleys. I am trying to remove the motor mount bracket on the engine block for the passenger side upper motor mount. I have the motor mount off, but the bracket that holds the mount to the engine block has a stud in the way. I have looked at this site and the TB write-up and other sites that recommend removing that bracket to make it easier to get to the water pump, and tensioner pulley - since I have bear paws for hands it is difficult at best to get to those items with the bracket still attached to the block.

Here is a picture of the stud in front of the bolt:

Any pointers on how to remove the stud would be appreciated.

Thank you,

Tom.

Maybe this will give you some ideas.

Sounds like a similar situation.

Strange that I never had the issue when attacking the timing belt on my '01.

Just a wild guess, it looks like the last 1" of thread sits in the air unused so maybe just put the grinder on it and shape some 'hex' like bolt head out of it so you can put a socket on it.

Hello alschnertz,

I really appreciate the pointer to that site. All I can say is boy do I feel dumb for not thinking about using a deep offset wrench.

I guess I get to run out and pick up some deep offset wrenches to get that bolt out.

I will post an update after I pick up the wrenches.

Thank you,

Tom.

You use a stud puller. this is the tool that you use:

I had the same problem. What I ended up doing was so simple I kicked myself for trying to find a wrench that would fit. I used two of the nuts from the motor mount and spun the first one down about an inch. I then took second one and spun it to meet the other one and took 2 wrenches and spun them opposite ways to lock them and then took a wrench to the bottom one and the stud came right out with little force.

I just did a total timing belt kit with water pump and pulleys on this same car without having to remove the engine mounts. It’s not easy, but if you put the car on jack stands and remove some pressure by using a floor jack with a wood block to lift the motor. There is no way your getting that bolt out for a simple timing belt change.

Remove the mounts from the body first, lift motor slightly to relieve pressure, there are 2 nuts and 1 bolt that you will need an impact to remove. After that the mount should be loose but you will need to raise/lower the motor to move it out of the way.

BTW: get a water pump gasket from a Volvo dealer. The ones that come in those kits don’t fit great and leak easily. Like $12 from Volvo when I made the mistake.

Damn didn’t realize this post was from a month ago. Hope it went well. If not DM me I’m pretty fluent in these timings.

I know this is an old post, but I just finished up a timing belt job on my 2001 V40 and I too was stumped in trying to remove those studs.

I ended up just removing the bolts that hold that engine mount piece to the engine block and left the studs in place. This took the entire piece out and made it much easier to change the timing belt and pulleys.

If I remember, there are 4 bolts for that engine mount....one of them looks like it was be impossible to remove because the stud is in the way, but it can be done. I used a regular hand wrench and slowly worked it out since you can't fit a socket in there. It's best to remove the other bolts first, so as you work the last one out, the engine mount can separate from the engine block which allows you to keep working that last bolt out.
