XC90 Unidentified Coolant Leak

Post by MisterWooley »

XC90 2004 D5 2.4 diesel 163 bhp (RHD UK) 198,000 miles
About 3 months ago I started to see a small coolant loss. Maybe due to slight weeping from top up bottle beginning to crack but nothing visible anywhere in/under engine, or inside car floor pans .
That has changed quite suddenly. Today in the morning I topped up the coolant level drove into town, 6 miles, drove home 6 miles but on the way home got the coolant low warning. So thats a loss of about 1 pint in 12 miles, getting serious.
Most of the time no dripping underneath but sometime yes, the from left side of the engine block is wet. I'm at a loss as to where the leak is. The thermostat housing seems to be dry so not dripping down from there. I did wonder if the leak is from the water pump but don't see how that would wet the front of the block. Any hints please?

Pressure test the system. In the US many auto parts stores will loan the pressure tester to you for free.

Put some trace dye in the coolant then, with a UV light trace the leak back to the source.
