Fuel Pump Died Again? 2003 V70

Hi guys, I have a 2003 V70 base 2.4 non-turbo with the metal fuel tank. I had only been driving about 2 minutes when the engine suddenly lost power/rpms dropped and died about 5 seconds later.

I tried starting it and it just cranked over. It has the same symptoms the last 2 times I replaced the fuel pump. I replaced the fuel pump about 1 year ago and 1 year before that. They go out on me about once per year. I replaced them with Bosch units. I had to have the car towed home.

What could cause my fuel pump to go out so many times? I do not trust this car anymore.

- Search forum for PEM.

- It is above the metal fuel tank. The small bolt is 7-mm type. Once the bolt is out, there is a small metal plate, remove it. Then the PEM comes out.

- PEM is $15 at junk yard. Ebay about $50.

- Any error codes?

You need to go into VIDA and turn the fuel pump on to test it for fuel pressure.

The problem could be in the CEM and integral fuelmpump relay, the PEM, or the pump, or the pump hoses are linked in the tank due to incorrect installation

I have error code P0089 which is the fuel pressure regulator. However, from my understanding this could mean a few different things are wrong; not just the fuel pressure regulator. Also, I think the fuel pressure regulator is part of the fuel pump in my car?

There is a fuel pressure sensor on the fuel rail I believe, but I would not trust the codes to lead you to the right component.

- Actually that code is pretty accurate for FPS.

- The FPS usually fails after 120K miles. New one is about $40. See the link below.
Use only BOSCH.

- Held by a single Torx bolt.

- Have a rag ready to catch the spilled fuel.

- Max: 5 min. job.

Hey guys I want to update the thread.

I bought a new oem Bosch fuel pressure sensor and put it in yesterday. Car started up and I drove it half a mile up my street and back. Drove fine.

Today I started it up and drove 3 miles. At 3 miles it died on me while I was going uphill and I pulled over. Tried starting and same symptoms as before; just cranked but wouldn't turn over.

I try starting it 20 minutes later and it starts up. I try revving it in park and the engine seems to be straining/rough feeling above 2k rpms. I have it towed back.

Start it up and drive it off tow truck up my driveway and park it. Rev engine in park and it's nice and smooth feeling no issues.

What do you guys think about this? Is my PEM bad? I have the metal fuel tank so I think the PEM sits above it on the corner.

You need to monitor the fuel pressure to see if you can isolate the system to fuel delivery before throwing parts. The codes guide but do not replace troubleshooting.

With a well defined stumble regime above 2000 rpm, check to see if you are getting fuel pressure at that rpm range.

- If you have access to junk yard, then a PEM is about $15. I am not a "part swapper", but this is an exception b/c swapping PEM is a 10-min job (7-mm bolt, small plate and the PEM comes out). If metal fuel tank, then PEM sits above fuel tank.

- Sometimes swapping a with a known good part is both diagnostic and therapeutic.

PS: Swapping is only an issue when:
- The part in question is expensive like $500-$1000 etc.
- Difficult to access.

The PEM is news to me. Where would it be with a plastic tank?

Maybe try replacing the fuel filter too? Hengst is a good brand.
