Load rating for roof and roof rack

Post by Jagger »

Hi everybody,
does anyone have experience with roof top tents mounted onto a XC70, 2005?

My questions are the following:
- is it possible to sleep 2 people on top of a XC70?
- are the weight to be carried by the factory fitted rails or do they have to be replaced with some other fixtures?
(I am sure that I need some cross bars on top of the rails, on which the roof top tent's base will rest.)
- what is the maximum load rating for the roof of the XC70?
- the roof top tent is 66kg. My wife and I will weigh something like 160kg together. Part of the weight will be taken care of by the
ladder, though.

Roof weight limit is 100 kg. Static load (no road motion) is probably more, but you are on your own here.

The load limit is with regard to safety in accidents and so on so I wouldn't worry about 160 kg of static load if it was me.

165lbs is what my Thule rack lists as the maximum load. But this is a figure that comes from DOT crash standards. In other words, a load will sheer off the roof and go flying in the direction of travel during a crash.
As far as a "static load" is concerned, I could probably safely put about twice that weight up on the crossbars.

The thought of a crash is terrifying but nothing compared to the possibility that you have even hinted at putting SWMBO weight on the internet.

He didn't though. He left some doubt by combining with his own weight ;-)

SWMBO...She who must be obeyed, aka the better half, or partner in crime.

It’s still too dangerous for me like running with scissors. What if my weight is on the internet and somebody makes a bot to go find it?
