Braking issues after new Xemodex ABS module - advice needed please...

Post by graphicz »

1999 Volvo v70
Vehicle Year: 1999-2000
Make: Volvo
Model: V70
VIN Number: YV1LW55B2X2556081

Initially had a lot of ETM light and performance glitches, eventually sent the ETM to xemodex for rebuild/modification to contactless and refitted it along with a new MAF from Xemodex. It had previously had the 02 sensor replaced.

All was well for a whole but had the odd ETM light and splutter but infrequently. No voltage drop between battery and fuse box and supply to ETM seems OK.

Started getting the ABS Light - Brake Light - Engine Management Light - Speedo and trip not working syndrome. Intermittent, would last ten minutes or so at a time then clear. Wedged plastic behind connector and all seemed well for a year. The syndrome recurred more frequently so bit the bullet and bought an ABS unit from Xemodex. At the same time the front nearside (left) wheel bearing was getting noisy.

My long suffering mechanic (I have known him longer than any of my wives and have never fallen out with him!) replaced the wheel bearing and the ABS module. Here we start to think there may have been a front end rebuild at some point as the wheel bearing appropriate to the VIN was fitted and the car banged loudly on braking and sometimes didn’t stop. The original wheel bearing cured the issue so after two or three more wheel bearings one was fitted that was OK. The braking is still not right. Sometimes it is fine then sometimes you get the throbbing through the pedal as if the ABS was activating on ice (no ice!) sometimes the pedal was veryu form/hard of braking and there was NO braking for half a second then the pedal relaxed and the car braked. Sometimes there is a scraping noise from under the car accompanying this scenario. On the drive home from having all this done the Engine management light came on and has stayed on, fault code P0171. I always use RedEx in the petrol and have just put a shot of Wynnes in but the car performs really well, super fast acceleration and good speed but some wheel vibrate above 70mph now like unbalanced wheels but wasn't there before.

So I am a bit anxious about the braking and wondered if this rang a bell or if anyone had experienced similar?

Thank you

Check your CV joints after all of those bearing swaps - that could cause the wheel issue.

Double check that master cylinder and the ABS sensors.

In order to learn how to fix something, you must first learn how to break it.
