That is awful - look at that deformation on that seal at the 2130 position (clock face)

Looks like they pushed it in with a screwdriver.

I think their tools should go in the ocean, at least 50 miles offshore

So it was the oil pump seal after all. I mentioned this as a possibility but you were saying the oil was dripping from the head. Good find. Looks like they used a screw driver to put the seal in. All said and done - not a costly repair - and great to know you now have it fixed right.

Wait a minute... where is the oil leak from the seal?

So far so good.

Jonesg, somehow, the impeller had been pushed back into the pump body (the bit one replaces, not the engine side housing). and had put a nice gouge into the body. the bearings felt tight, but spinning it by hand resulted in a nice grinding of impeller into the body. Wrong parts may possible I suppose, but looking at the rest of the job, ham fistedness is more likely.

Fully home, the seal sits with a nice bevel between the top of it and the pump. As can be seen in the pic, despite destroying it during installation, it wasn't home, either, and it more or less fell out. My first step in diagnosis was manifold off to check the breather box, which was amazingly clear, so it seems unlikely it was pushed out in service.

Herman, yep, confusingly, the largest concentration of pooled oil (aside from the floor) was on top of the oil pump and tensioner, seemingly from behind the plastic backing. I understand oil can get flung around, but not such a quantity in such a short space of time.

xHeart, when I removed the pulley, there was a satisfying dribble of oil. The pic was taken after I'd given everything a clean up ready to remove the oil pump.

I was quite impressed by the design of the oil pump (its easy removal), but then again, realistically how often does one need to replace one? It took me back to days of BMC engines with the oil pump hanging out the side of the block.

What did you use to get the timing belt drive sprocket off the end of crank. I got the oil pump seal kit and struggled to get that drive off. Was going to try again when I had proper puller

In my case, once the big nut was off, the assembly slid off easily. Be sure to loosen/remove the 10mm bolts, as access/clearance is tight to remove the pulley assembly in one go. Be aware that the crank lock tool is essential, and that at least in the case of the one I have, only seems to work to get it undone. it does not retain clockwise motion to tighten.

It seems silly to me that the acc belt pulley can't be removed just by removing the four bolts. It would make various things much, much easier.

Also a silly mystery is the crank lock arrangement - why not just insert into the flywheel without disturbing the starter, or for that matter, intruding upon the crankcase?

You can skip the crank lock if you plan ahead, and hit the crank pulley nut with a impact to zip it off before removing the timing belt. Of course with a standard, you can lock the engine in gear, too.

I used the starter to blip the bolt loose on my old 740.
Brace ratchet handle against the frame.

ashgolds60 - You ask how to get the timing belt drive sprocket off.

To remove the sprocket after the harmonic balancer and crank bolt is removed - on one Volvo it just came off easily with a little hand force like mpwdhc stated, on another Volvo I had to use a three jaw puller - but it came out with little effort.
