Clunk when shifting into R with automatic V50 2007

Post by ande2 »

Hi, does this sound familiar to anyone, when the car has stood for an hour or so or longer and i engage R from P it first does the usual soft jerk and then like half a second later there is a clunk from the front. This happens while still having the foot on the brake pedal.

Then clunk only comes one time and if i go back to P and then R again nothing. There is a clunk at start only with P to R not P to D 90% of times.
I showed the car to a local Volvo mechanic (had to go to lunch after arriving to get the sound to occur). He said he had heard similar often and said it is from the brakes (maybe meant that some components are settling in/moving into place)

I tried to locate the sound with a friend and held my hand on the brake caliper but could not verify that the sound would come from the brakes. Also i have tried pumping the pedal in P before putting R but still there is a clunk.

I´ve read on the net with similar sounds and people have taken out the driveshafts from the gearbox and greased them. I asked the machanic about this but he only remember some very old cars where he has done this. He didn´t believe this would be the issue.

Otherwise the car runs smooth through all gears and noting noticeable during driving.

The car is a V50 2.4 Geartronic 2007 driven 150 000km (93 000miles).
The car is "new" to me so can´t say if this has always been a problem.

Does it sound familiar to anyone?

Have you ever done a transmission fluid drain and fill?
It might be time and what you're getting is the early signs of the fluid losing it's ability to shift your gears properly.
This usually happens on these auto trans right before 100K.

Try starting the car in neutral for first start of the day. Also, try backing in to your parking spot and se if it clunks then if put in D before R
Current Volvos:
1998 V70 T5, 112k sat 5 years, still in mechanical coma (finally at the top of the pile )
2004 XC90 T6 AWD: 186k, 60 on transaxle ( traded in )
1998 POS70 N/A: DD/training aid, 236k but really about 240k, I think...ABS module( passed on to son who sold it)

Only to come back...
I have now put new axle bolt, greased the hub/axle but still there is the clunk. How much can you tighten the axle nut safely, now it is 35nm +90degrees +45degrees with the new bolt

2008 Volvo V50 automatic. There is a small clunk from the gearbox as it moves through the gears more noticeable as the box moves into third gear. Any ideas on the possible cause
