95 940 wont run. please help

Post by TrashVolvo940 »

For starters I have spent about 1500 so far on this trash car in the past 2 years trying to figure out this problem. I've taken it to the same place several times now even leaving it there for months at a time hoping they could figure out what the issue is. So far I get it back from them and the issue remains. The car doesn't start most of the time and if it does, it will idle roughly and die after a few seconds or it will idle very roughly for longer and eventually even out and idle smoothly. After driving it and parking it, It will start again just fine but if I let it sit for more than a day it usually wont start again. I've had it towed down to the shop and then while its there they cannot recreate the problems I am having. At this point I want to drive this car off a cliff. I do not have the money to spend more on this car than it is worth, I need to know the exact issue and fix that. I cannot just blindly replace parts hoping it will fix the issue like this shop I am working with seems to have been doing.

These reciepts are not in order, the middle is the first time I took it in, and the top photo is the most recent where all they did was replace the crankshaft position sensor which has not helped anything

Well now, what engine does it have, and what ignition/fuel ECUs does it have?

So, on fuel rail is a fuel pressure test port; so a gauge needs to be hooked to it. Some autostores loan these out...it may have a Ford hookup (fitting) on it.

This must be done first. Report back your findings, with other information asked for.

PS: Start Instructions

1. Turn Key to On position

2. Listen for fuel pump running

3. After five seconds, turn to start...VaRoom

Check spark- test coil- all mundane things make sure distributor is clean- and check rotor. Strong possibility the radio suppression relay is not functioning. all belts properly tight? wiring to the injectors is good and not shorting out? the ground cables to the engine are good and solid? If it starts then it's got spark etc. but if it dies then check the ignition relay on the drivers side near or behind the air cleaner housing. Testing the coil will tell you if this particular relay is getting voltage.
Sometimes the wiring to the RSR gets frayed or loses good connection esp. if the vehicle is "older". The car runs so the ECU is probably ok as well as the computer. do you get "check engine light"?

One other thought- if the transmission has been taken out at any time was the timing ring installed correctly? The engine will run even if it's off timing by a few teeth but roughly. These engines are pretty tough.
