Thermostat Brands

Post by mecheng » Thu Jun 07, 2018 8:55 am

My parts guy can get two different Thermostat brands, Behr and Vernet.

Any recommendations?

Some say Behr didn't last at all, I'd be even less sure about less known Vernet...

Thermostats are cheap, do not use anything other than OE, and when you change the thermostat I would suggest changing the ECT as well.

Ooops I posted in the wrong forum, this is for my 850, I have the OEM (Wahler) one, but I find they fail after some time.
Mods can you move please.

I have used all of them. For your Volvo 850...

- Vernet is French, it is OK but the rubber gasket crumbled after 5y.

- Behr is OK.

- Wahler is OEM. It should last 80K-100K.

I imagine Ashvolvo means a Volvo blue box part, Volvo coolant is in order as well. It's only $20 a gallon at the dealer parts counter.

In my car I have the coolant replaced every other year since new. My factory thermostat was replaced with the timing belt and water pump that was 12 years and 109,000 miles. The thermostat was part of the service, that is the only reason it was replaced. It has been 2 years 51,000 miles since the replacement of the belt, pump, thermostat + housing. The thermostat is still fine. I had my dealership do that work so all parts were blue box genuine Volvo parts.

Honestly this is the first car I kept long enough to replace the thermostat. I have never had a Volvo overheat or have a thermostat go bad. June

I had [email protected] 140K for Thermostat. I changed the Thermostat and ECT sensor ( I think Volvo call it temperature sending unit) and flushed the coolant. This is the first change for the both the items.

Our local dealer recommends changing the thermostat every 3 years. Part of that is the huge variation in temperatures I understand cause them to fail more often.

Thanks, probably why the Behr is $19, and the Vernet is $10. I will try the Behr. The Wahler seems to last 120,000km or so.
