Change passenger axle carrier bearing?

Post by ems_kws » Sat Jun 09, 2018 3:50 pm

I have a 2000 V70 Cross Country. I am putting in a new angle gear and while I had the passenger side axle out I check the carrier bearing. It's not completely shot yet so there's a lot more play than any bearing should have. Nobody seems to carry this Barry. I assume it is part of the entire unit. CV joints are good so I have found a bearing from SKF that appears to be the same dimensions as the original. Has anybody ever changed just the bearing? Any advice?

You can use the one listed for the older axles (98 and older) that are still listed. You will need a puller to remove it (I had the dealer do it for me) and then I used a length of metal fence tube and the top cap for the fence post and knocked a new one back on. Abscate found some Ford Transit ones for me in Turkey that were $10 each plush shipping. Volvo one is $150 or more!! The only difference is that the Ford ones I bought (not sure they were OE) have a slightly rounded outer edge profile but that is ok.

Wow guys that seems like a lot of trouble to change just the carrier bearing but if that's the best recourse for you. I have a 1998 XC70 and pulled an axle from the scrap yard from a 1998 AWD and it was only20$.and fits like a glove with no issues. This particular wagon I have is " dialed up" it'll smoke the front tires until I get off the gas pedal. maybe I'm just too lucky... the old axle got the heave ho, out you go! Of course , Volvo wants 540$ per side... yeah right... gold-plated?... Anyway... Volvo is Latin for , I roll.... Rolling on!!.. MDK

Well you can get lucky on used axles. When looking for a rocking horse dropping availability axle for my 2000 V70 base 5 speed auto (RHS) I could only find one in NA and it arrived damaged by UPS. Eventually another came into PnP and the carrier bearing was bad on that one as well as the original axle.

Good luck and finding a good used one might be the way to go. Maybe worth trying Erie Vo-Vo, vandsautodismantlers in CA, or even Chapman Motors on Vancouver Island Canada and see if they have a good axle for cheaper. The one I got from Erie was $125 US + shipping.

Now I see the trouble...RHS right hand steering? If I'm decimenating the acronym correctly. I keep forgetting this is a GLOBAL forum. The last set of factory wheels on my 1999 V70 ( which is sold) where manufactured in South Africa.

Im going to give it a shot. I think I found a bearing made by SKF that has the same dimensions. Hopefully my buddy can press the old one off without ant issues. If it works I post the P/N I use.

Have him shock it and then heat it first, should come off like butter if he's lucky.
