1999 S70 ABS Problem

Post by Reinie » Tue Jun 12, 2018 9:19 pm

My 1999 S70 non-turbo Base (240K miles) has an issue with the ABS system going off on dry pavement. Mostly when turning to the right into a parking spot, but also when driving straight ahead. There is also a clack, clack, clack that comes and goes that is related to the ABS issue, and not a CV joint issue. I have replaced the ABS module long ago. The wheel sensors are original. Does this sound like a problem with a worn reluctor ring on the axle?

I had a similar issue on my daughter's '98 and it turned out it was a bad hub and the ring was not being held centered on the sensor.

Do you recommend replacing the entire axle, or try to remove and replace the ring. I’m leaning toward replacing the axle because the cv joint on that side has a lot of miles on it.

If you are going to replace it try to find a good used Volvo OE one over a rebuilt or aftermarket unit. Those are just going to give you grief.

Remove the axle from the hub and give it a really good look over. Check the ABS ring for rust and dirt in the groves and especially for cracks which can form with rust build up. Clear the hole for the ABS sensor and check the wire for damage and finally check the sensor resistance.

Neil.

Was the module replaced or repaired?

Replaced by a Volvo specific repair shop. Not sure if it was a remanufactured module. Seems to me it was.
