front suspension help

Post by rhl » Wed Jun 13, 2018 6:43 am

greetings all,

i'm in a quandary and thank you for your input and experience.

i have a banging/rattling noise from the drivers side front of the vehicle. (190K - 2000 V70 XC) i have replaced the sway bar end links, and just yesterday the inner/outer tie rods.

the control arms shows wear, but no significant cracks. the struts are in good shape. the upper spring mount isn't cracked and the strut mount bearings seem to be ok.

it is a rather pronounced noise, but the smallest crack in the road can provoke it.

any ideas? what have i missed?

again, thank you...

How are the CV joints on the axle?

Check the sway-bar bushes for separation from the sway-bar itself. They are bonded to the sway-bar and will come adrift with age.

How did you check the upper spring seats for condition? The only real way to do so is to remove the top nut and washer and check the center bush has not split from the rubber portion.

Finally have you checked the ball-joint and caliper and bracket for being tight? Also is the ball-joint ok?

Neil.

Thank you for your replies gents.

The ball joint seems to be okay - at least no tears or drifting in steering.

I checked the spring seat because there was another noise on the front passenger side, and an indy volvo repair shop here diagnosed that the upper strut bearing was bad, and looked at the right side at least while I was replacing that, and it seemed in good condition -probably replaced when the sachs struts were installed.

Will have to look at CV joints and sway bar bushings...

My first comment is be sure you have totally ruled out the sway bar end links (are you *sure* they are tight on both ends?) and the spring seats. Many times people have sworn it is not the end links, but it is the end links. Etc. So, since you didn't answer Neil's question about the spring seats I will post a related one, at the risk of beating a dead horse:

A very common way to check the spring seat is with the top nut in place. if you put a wrench on the top nut are you able to rotate the nut, or does it show resistance and spring back?

thanks erik,

just checked the end links. on top connection was able to tighten a 1/4 turn.

with respects to top strut nut - on the banging side, I turned it and there was resistance. on the other side, there was no resistance and it just spun. i'm assuming the resistance is what is desired?

is it possible that the lower ball joint could cause such a sound?

thank you!

ok - time to eat humble pie. that 1/4 turn, or it must have been more, fixed the noise. thanks for pointing out the obvious!

You get whip cream with your pie :) - the spring seat is definitely shot on the the side that spins. I only buy the Volvo part on those, the other ones just fail and fail and fail ... it's not urgent but it will get noisy, like lots of creaks and squeaks, and the ride will suffer a little bit.

If that didn't work (Torque for those is supposed to be 50Nm or 37 ft/lb, but many have tightened them more. Always make sure that both sides are clean and flat, even use emery paper on them to give a good surface and then torque them down.

I chased a groan from my suspension for 4 years and $XXXX's and after spending a month at the dealer (they worked on it when they had free time) I asked them to double check the sub-frame bushes as the noise first started after the sub-frame was dropped to do the RMS.

Sure enough the RH rear bush just rotated in the sub-frame. Now all is quiet for now!

Neil.
