2001 Volvo S40 Stalled out and now won't start

Post by ambermic83 » Wed Jun 13, 2018 1:09 pm

Hi I am new to this forum but I wanted to run my issue by someone who knows more about these cars than I do.

My car was low on gas, I went to start it, it started up but sputtered and when I hit the brake it stalled out and then would just crank over and over with no start.

The engine codes we got off our reader were

P0017 P0341, P0335

Replaced both the camshaft sensor and the crankshaft sensor and replaced the FPR. Still the car just cranks and cranks but will not start. It has gas in it now, I put some in when this first happened. The battery ran down so i have charged that. After reading other issues like this I am looking for the fuel relay fuse, I am not sure if my car has one, it is not labeled like the ones I saw in some videos I have watched (P.S. I am female and trying to figure this out because my husband did not want to buy this car at all, and I have always wanted a Volvo)

Now I only get the P0341 someone suggested I check the camshaft wiring but did not tell me how to do that. Does anyone else have any suggestions on what I should look at? Does this car have a fuel relay fuse and if so where is it at? I can take photos of both my fuse boxes if need be any help would be great! Thank you

Hello, do you know which engine does it has? If it's the 2.4 you may also try asking on the S60 forum.

Try not to crank too much as this wears the starter prematurely.

Did it had other issues before or was running fine?

The only other issue it had was rough idle, like it would sputter when it started and then finally would rev itself up. Do you know how to check the wiring at the Camshaft? What should the voltage read? I am not sure what engine I know it is a turbo 1.9T 2001 S40.

It has an oil leak but the last mechanic it was at could not find where it was coming from. I cleaned it all up, the spark plugs we changed right after we got the car, so they have about 1500 miles on them. My husband was thinking before this happened he would replace the ignition coils to the plugs, but other than that the only code I am getting is the P0341 code.

I just had a similar problem with my Volvo V40 where I couldn't get it to start after changing my timing belt and fixing some oil leaks. It would just crank and crank.

Finally figured out that I installed two of the plug wires out of order. Fired up after that but then it was running very rough. The spark plugs were new, but the wires and ignition coils were about 7 years old.

With the car running, I pulled each plug wire and ignition coil one at a time. When I pulled one and the rough idle stayed the same and the car didn't die, I knew I had a bad plug wire or ignition coil. Replaced all of that and the car ran like new again.

Point being it was a simple fix. Start with the easy things first.

So maybe changing out the ignition coils would be a place to start as well?

If it were me, I would try to jump the car with another car to make sure 100% it wasn't the battery.

I would verify the fuel pump whirrrs into action when you turn the key to ignition.

Then yes, I would probably change the ignition coils and plug wires especially if it's been a long time since they were changed. My v40 has two wires and two ignition coils. Assuming the S40 is the same.

That's assuming the car still wont crank. If it did start and ran rough, I would then pull each wire and ignition coil one at a time. Typically when you pull a working one with the car running, the car will sputter and die. If you pull one and nothing happens, then that wire or ignition coil is probably bad. And best to replace all at once.

It's not the best idea to just start throwing money at parts, but that seems like a logical thing to remove from the list of culprits.

It will not start, we did hook it up and try to jump it last night, and still just err err err, fuel pump is making the hum, he thought he would change the filter just to be sure, and he was talking about replacing those coils, so I will let him know your suggestion on that. Already changed three small parts and it was a pretty penny. Not looking to keep guessing. Do you know where the fuel pump relay is on the fuse box, the book does not mention it at all.

A video with sound of the car trying to start might help the people on the forum.

The cover of the fuse box should have a diagram to where fuses are located. Did you see that?

As for the ignition coils, normally these fail one at a time and the engine can still run. May try one coil (even a used one) see what it does but at this point I wouldn't put money on it until you bring it back to life

Parts can also be got used from Ebay/junkyard, much cheaper when just trying to find the culprit

I think it's related to fuel delivery, maybe a relay, a filter
