2004-Volvo-s60R rod knocking

I have a subframe sitting here I just dropped out of a car that locked up a water pump, with a good 100,000 mile short block & transmission from a 97 850T sedan. Can I use the upper end from the 2004 with a rod knock on it and put the '04 together with the '97 block?
What do you guys think?

I would check the build threads on VS and maybe with ARD, I seem to recall them doing some of this. Of course you won't have the oiling for the CVVT solenoids. Also, the 04 head is solid lifter, I don't know how that would affect things oil wise.
Current Volvos:
1998 V70 T5, 112k sat 5 years, still in mechanical coma (finally at the top of the pile )
2004 XC90 T6 AWD: 186k, 60 on transaxle ( traded in )
1998 POS70 N/A: DD/training aid, 236k but really about 240k, I think...ABS module( passed on to son who sold it)

It has been tried by a highly competent mechanic who is a member here (Mike / precopster) and, as I recall, it was not successful.

Using a RN engine in an older car is a reasonable project but going the other way, not so much. I won't go so far as to say it is impossible, given enough time and money just about anything can be accomplished but it would wind up costing more than just scaring up a correct engine. The heads are not interchangeable and the '04 has CVVT which is a totally different head. The accessory mounting is totally different and i requires fabricating and welding on additional brackets to mount the alternator, power steering pump, and air conditioner compressor. The oil cooling system is totally different - The list goes on.

Thanks guys, sounds like it would be easier just to re do the bottom end of the existing engine.
