Speedo does not work...

Heh guys.
Just went out to look at a potential used V70 to purchase for myself and as I was taking her out for a test drive I noticed that the speedometer (digital) was seemingly stuck at zero mph, even though I was traveling at around 35 mph.
Can anyone tell me if this is a cheap fix or is it going to add several hundred dollars to the after purchase price?

You should have someone read out codes with VIDA and locate where the signal error is.

Dealing with CEM and DIm electronics can cost hundreds, yes. Troubleshooting without Vida is near impossible

Can you please enlighten me on"VIDA". Is that a device I could purchase for myself or is it to expensive unless you plan to use it alot?

abscate must be busy so I'll jump in.

What year is your V70?

VIDA is the proprietary program which interfaces with the system(s) in the car. It's loaded onto a laptop and from what I've read you're WAY better off buying a complete set up installed. There are minimum system requirements if you want to buy a disc and install it yourself. Many have reported having trouble getting their laptops to load it.
Also, a DICE unit is linked between your laptop and the car. I imagine it's some kind of signal processor given the immense quantity of data which these cars can read / use / report and the limited number of pins in the OBD plug.

Frequently, but not 100% of the time, a generic code reader can point you in the right direction for many engine / emissions codes but sourcing a DIM's problem would never be within their capabilities. Finding a high end aftermarket unit which would mimic a VIDA/DICE setup mightn't be possible. There are certain Innova (sp?) models which are better than average but why muck about?

A VIDA setup can actuate motors for testing, read and assess sensors and contains parts listings. I believe it also has repair instructions. I'm pretty sure it's THE replacement for paper manuals.

Someone who owns one should be along with anything I missed.

I have a BSR-PPC reader which reads the codes as a VIDA would. That is to say it pulls the Volvo specific (nomenclature) codes from each of the system's nodes. This is an accurate way to retrieve and clear your codes in the absence of a VIDA.

IMPORTANT: If the year of your car is within my reader's range and you're ever near Hackensack, NJ feel free to contact me and I can at least read and erase every code. You then would need to look up each code's meaning online. That you mentioned having a digital speedo makes me think my reader might not be for you.

Also, there are service centers which can fix (resolder / inspect) a removed DIM. Said service would be wasted if your speedo's fault lies elsewhere.

Thank you sir for your detailed response. You have at the least taught me a few things about this topic that I did not know before. I have already written off purchasing this used V70 as the seller has lied to me twice already.
