Steering Rack Leak Alternatives

Post by volvooh »

I've got a leak from my rack in my '05 V70 with 242,xxx mi. I'm looking for alternatives to a rack replacement. Its out of my wheelhouse to do it my self and out of my budget to have my indie do it.

I have read previously read where some used Lucas P/S sealer. I thought I saw one where Ozark Lee even ran a heavier transmission fluid through it with some success.

The CHS 11S is too expensive to let it just drip out on the driveway. Any input is appreciated!

Until you fix it, use transmission fluid, keep in mind it may wear the pump. No such thing as alternative to rack replacement, does it leak at the seals inside the tie rod dust boots or at the lines?

Looks like inside the boots. I'm gonna take another look at it.

Given the cost of the labor may well mean the end of it.. It may last for a while with cheap trans oil still

Try ATP-205, it works well.

- Use Dexron-III, it is fine.

- Search volvospeed forum, there is a guy who bought the seal and replaced the seal for the Volvo 850, S70 series (at the end of the rack) with the steering rack in place. If you can magically find the seal for your 2005 V70, then you are good.

- This only works on pass side.

You could maybe loop the power steering lines to bypass the rack. Can't remove the pump or run it dry since the serpentine belt goes around it.

Yes, eliminating power steering requires more muscle while driving it. If grandma needs to borrow a car because hers is in the shop, she won't be borrowing yours.
