3M also sells a liquid adhesive specifically for installing emblems and trim on car exteriors.
The adhesive does not work as well as 3M emblem tape. It is the exact replacement material as the original. After completely removing all the original material off the back of the emblem, stick the tape to the back of the emblem, then use a exact-o knife or razor blade to trim the excess, finely peel the plastic sheeting to expose the tape adhesive and stick. I have replaced emblems on a few of my cars. I always have used 3M Automotive molding/ trim tape (Thin roll with red backing). Prep the area with alcohol, let dry, and make sure you get the placement right on the first try because it is horrible to get back off. Holds very well.

As for removal, I find that floss breaks. I prefer using fishing line while wearing thick gloves so it doesn't eat up my fingers. I never have had to heat an emblem to get it off, but that might help the adhesive release easier and come off the car in one piece. I use concentrated goo-gone to get any leftovers off.

On refinishing the emblem, there is a chrome spray paint I found at my local hardware place that works pretty well. The only issue with that spray is if you clear coat it, it turns into gloss grey and doesn't look chrome anymore.

Peanut butter helps remove adhesive residue from paint. Rub it on with your finger instead of eating it off a spoon. I combined it with WD-40.
