ECU Swapping to get live numbers?

Post by shihabafi »

I have a '95 850 with and OBDII reader, but it doesn't show live data.... or if it does, I haven't figured out how to find it. So I was wondering if I could just yank an ECU out of a '96 model, and just throw it in mine, and reap the benefits of live data. Would this work?

Well, I don't know about the swapability of 96 into 95, but without modifications the live frame data frombthe 96 ECU is not very good (sliw rate). Va5t Tuning ogfers an updated ECU glash for higher livefram data rates.

It isn't possible because of totally different managements, wiring, ecu pinouts,sensors...etc.
'95 non turbo is 3.2 LH Jetronic vs.Motronic 4.4.
'97 850 2.5 20v / fully equipped / Motronic 4.4 from the factory / upgraded with S,V,C,XC70 instrument cluster / polar white wagon

Came across this thread while trying to find the thread that abscate said he was going to "split off the meta topic of What comes with what since we are peeing in Shihab's diary too much"...

As per my experience scanning Shihab's '95 850 on 2018-09-08 (using either volvo850diag on Win7 w/ OBDLink SX USB, or xiaotec "850 OBD-II" V1.0.7 app on Android w/ OBDLink LX BT) and successfully reading OBDII data in both cases, his 95 850 *can* indeed be scanned by standard, common OBDII software/hardware. I'll post the details in shihabafi's viewtopic.php?f=1&t=85982 "Diary of a 17 y/o with an 850" thread (probably) later today or tomorrow.

Since Shihab prefers to use his iPad and cheap ELM327 WIFI device to perform diagnostics, maybe someone here that consistently, successfully uses iPad (or iPhone) and ELM327 WIFI might offer some suggestions to Shihab of what software works for you. He probably wants something roughly equivalent to Torque in the Android world, but free or low cost, and works with his ELM327 WIFI and iPad. [Since both iPad and ELM327 WIFI are outside my realm of experience, someone else can surely help him better than me.] IIRC, I'm near certain that someone here at MVS has used both an iOS based system with an ELM327 WIFI device to do some scanning of '96-'98 850/SVC70. And his '95 850 behaves similarly as far as OBDII goes.
