Question to early P2 T5 owners

Post by 93SCMax »

Greetings.
My 2001 V70 T5 does not currently have a splash guard. I don't know if it never came with one, or if the local dealer who did the 1st oil change actually never reinstalled it. I've done every oil change since 2002, and no guard was present.
I've seen YouTube videos where the splash guard needed to be removed from a S60 T5 for an oil change, and read people mentioning them on this forum.

The engine bay tends to get dirtier than other vehicles I own that do have splash guards. Just wondering if splash guards weren't installed on any V70's that were turbo charged (to improve air circulation?), or whether my dealer screwed up years ago.

I can always get to the local pick-n-pull and look for a replacement.

Your input is welcome. Thanks!

I think all of them have at least the holes to attach the small bolts for the skid plate. My guess is all models came with one, and also almost all got thrown into the bin by some mechanic in a hurry

Also, almost impossible to find at the junk yard, and these also commonly break at the rear tabs

One use is to protect the underneath from road debris (stones, a piece of truck tire, block of ice, etc) - may not ever happen, but when it happens you'll be glad the guard plate was there.

Also, in the areas with lots of salt on the road in winter time, it protects the power steering lines from rusting too much - a problem on the 2001-2004 SMI racks

While there, I'd recommend also installing some sort of a plastic grid inside the lower front bumper hole where the radiator is quite exposed to road debris as well

Volvo has the bolts for the plate, about $1 each or less, you'll need about 7 if my memory serves well. Interesting fact, these exact bolts can also be used on the transmission valve body cover instead of the original torx bolts

It came with one. Find the part number and cross reference it to see what other cars used the same one. Then check Craigslist for people parting their car. I see them listed from time to time.

As to the special bolts - you should still have the clips attached to the subframe. Check and if you do, a common metric bolt works. Plus it will tell you the car came with a pan. If you do not, go to the hardware store find clips and bolts that work. I don't recall the size - but some one will chime in with it. Better yet ask for them from the seller of the splash pan when you buy the pan. Even if you have them installed ask for them as back ups.

I have one from a parts car, shipping might be a bit much though.

I don't have one on my 2001 V70 T5 because I removed it. Engine bay DOES get grimier than I'd like though. The point about salted roads by Oragex holds a lot of weight in certain climates.

The bolts are M8 and I think the pitch is 1.25

My V70, 2.4t did not come with the skid plate or the undertray when purchased used last year.
I bought another V70 for parts and it came with both.
So far I have not installed them since I am having problems which might mean removing them.
I'm going out on a limb here to say that they are not causing the DTC's.
