left side sips bag

Post by Captain Caffeine »

My 1999 V70 has an SRS light on. I have been told it is the left side sips bag. What is it and what is the cost? Can it be found used?

I bought the golden retreiver taxi about 3 years ago. It has been quite reliable--it does need the dreaded handbrake cable replacement, which I am putting off. But for the MASS. state inspection in November, I will need the SRS light issue fixed, and
my ebrake will need to be repaired. Thoughts on the SIPS bag issue?

Thanks ,
Captain Caffeine

The SIPS bag itself is actually a part of the seat. Unless you are really good at upholstery you really can't get to it.

The first step is to clear the code with VIDA / DICE and see if it comes back. If it does then you need to deal with it.

It could be a broken wire but it rarely is. It is difficult to trace SRS faults since if you unplug the air bag it will automatically trip the fault and you cannot, under any circumstances, use an ohmmeter to test the airbag itself. Using an ohmmeter can trigger the igniter.

The only legitimate way to test is to disconnect the battery, unplug the offending airbag, and plug in a test load. If the system will reset with the test load then the airbag is bad and, in the case of SIPS, the seat pretty much needs to be replaced.

Alternatively you can leave the test load in place and reset the system (it will turn off the SRS light) but doing so will disable the SIPS bag. The test load is nothing more than a 1.8 Ohm / 1/4 Watt resistor. The test loads from Volvo are a bit pricey but you can get them on eBay or maybe Amazon.

I’ve got a 99 SIps bag from my part out but we would have to check left/right comparability in VIDA

I would guess a wiring fault under the seat is more likely. Look under the seat for a bright green connector with a pink cover and see if it looks intact and clipped to the frame

Checked, you need a LHS sips if it’s bad, so no go on mine

Left side 9206303
Right side 9206304

Either one $388 at a FCP

You can usually buy a whole seat for about 50 usd from a PnP. Has to be from a 1999 or 2000 and the correct side.

You can see how you remove the Upholstrey to get to the SIPS bag in my seat thread

If the leather is good, you can sell it for $100 or so,

I’ll be cruising MA once school starts so I could whip by and clear that SRS for you,

@abscate: could you please post a link to your seat thread? I've searched the repairdata base but couldn't find it.
