What are these plugs in my spare tire well?

Post by tropikchiken »

Sorry if this is a stupid question... I couldn't find anything with Google, must be searching incorrectly.

I have two plugs in the back of my 2004 XC70, tucked under the cargo tray.
One is orange, another is red. What are they?

Here is a picture of them -

Are they related to towing? I want to get a tow hitch soon and thought I would need a wiring harness, but maybe I already have one...

Look like the ones on the radio amp, so I'd guess these are for the optional fadctory trunk subwoofer

They're for the trailer module. Or at least one of them is.

The sub wire harness shouldn't be there without a sub I think.

Heater for the third rear seat. It’s very sought after. Lots of references to it here on MVS

This is the P2 trailer wiring harness and module. It plugs into a receptacle located on the rear cargo area fuse box.

Actually, now that I think about this a bit more... This harness is for 2005+ V70. I rummaged around in my parts bin and found a 4 wire trailer harness for earlier P2s someone improvised using a 3rd party lighting module. They tapped into the wiring of the "red" connector shown in the OP's photo. So presumably the red connector is for a trailer harness.

This is the P2 sub-woofer harness (well part of it anyway) and sub-woofer amp. It is my understanding that very few P2s are pre-wired for the sub woofer.

Wow thanks for all the info guys. So presumably, I should be able to plug a trailer right into the red plug? I've never connected trailers before so I am unfamiliar with what their plugs look like.

It looks like maybe this is the part I need to connect to the red and then to the trailer? https://www.ipdusa.com/products/6802/11 ... -converter

Should work. Its a genuine VOLVO part. eeuroparts site has a better photo of it that shows the other stuff that comes with it. Mounting bracket, zip ties, fasteners...

Sounds about right but it looks very different from the euro version :-)
