S40 Security needs resetting

I have a 2005 S40 Mk2 and recently the key fob didn't work, I tried the spare and this didn't work either, I replaced the batteries to no avail. When I opened the car with the metal key the notification on the car was that the Security needs resetting. I telephoned my local Volvo dealer and they have said that to reset the key will cost £100-£200 and if they have to run diagnostics it will be up to £400 but if they have to order in parts this can cost anything (how long is a piece of string?). Has anyone else had this problem? The alarm no longer works and I cannot lock the boot (trunk). Any help will be appreciated.

I'm sorry it was a couple of months ago I couldn't do anything earlier as I have had a knee replacement. I don't remember the exact wording but it was the security that needed a service. The message only came up once then I started it and it went. (I wish it was plugs and points again I knew what I was doing in the 60's!)

Does this look familiar "Immobilizer see manual" ?

On them cars the connectors under the passengers side of the dash can work loose and cause all kids of errors. You might want to look there first.
