2000 S80 GM Trans. Name / Torque ratings

Post by TheMrFailz » Wed Sep 12, 2018 5:48 am

So my brother a few months ago picked up a 2000 Volvo S80 with the 2.9l non-turbo engine and the 4 speed automatic with ~150k miles on it for cheap. After a good bit of cleanup we've got the fluids replaced (trans flush too, old fluid was effectively burnt (but thankfully not to the point of no return)) and a plethora of electrical / bodywork issues fixed. Most of it we did ourselves so it wasn't very expensive.

Now the question is performance improvements. Obviously I'm well aware that the s80 is heavy (but really not that much heavier than a fully loaded s60 as far as I can tell) and the performance aftermarket is about the size of a grain of rice. Based on my internet digging so far I've found that it looks like between the heavier weight and the transmission being rather weak torque rating wise for what's being put through it, most people haven't thought it possible or worth it to mod it much which brings me to my question(s):

What's the max torque rating for the auto 4-speed trans? I can't seem to find it anywhere and I can't really find a solid name for it which isn't helping. I figure that the auto isn't something we want to keep if we're looking for performance but I'd really like to know the exact torque figure that it can handle. I saw somewhere a figure of 250 ft lbs but it was a forum post and I wasn't sure if it was completely accurate.

What's the GM equivalent name? I know that the trans was originally yanked from GM stock due to Volvo not having a transmission initially to put in there. I figure if I can get that name then I'd have better luck trying to find the torque rating.

If the 250ft lbs figure I found is correct, I'd be interested in trying an m65 swap as according to an old volvoclub page at https://www.volvoclub.org.uk/press/s80/ ... ech1.shtml , it can handle up to 280 ft lbs of torque which would give it a bit more breathing room. Oh and, it's manual too so that'd be nice.

The only concrete-ish max torque figure I've found so far is that http://etereman.com/blog/general-motors ... heir-cures mentions that it was used with motors producing up to 280 ft lbs of torque which would suggest that to be more or less the safe limit. However I suspect that the 280ft lbs of torque figure might be related to the T6 version of the s80 as it just so happens to make exactly the same amount of torque.

It's not 100% identical to what comes in a Buick. It is a version made especially for Volvo mostly the same but I understand that there are differences so look up the specks for the Volvo variant. My T6 it's called the 4T65 EVGT. Or VEGT but in the 2.9 NA the EV?? June

Forget about performance other than suspension. Buy a different car. The 2.9 n/a is a negative on the hot rodding scale. Nothing out there and car is too big. If it was a 2.5T or even the 2.9T maybe.

The transmission is the GM 4T65E for what you need to look up. GM to Volvo difference is nominal for the S80 FWD. Any trick for a similar Impala trannied car will work.
