2005 XC90 Died on hwy, fuel pump?

Help, Advice, Owners' Discussion and DIY Tutorials on Volvo XC90s. The XC90 proved to be very popular, and very good for Volvo's sales numbers, since its introduction in model year 2003 (North America).

2005 XC90 Died on hwy, fuel pump?

Post by Skenda02 » Thu Sep 13, 2018 8:00 pm

Driving to work yesterday morning, car died when I came to complete stop. All lights came on dash then they all turned off. Not triangle warning sign, nothing. Had it towed home. Not throwing any codes. Turn key and it cranks but won't start. Pulled cap off fuel valve, reservoir empty, there was no fuel to release. Took gas cap off, can hear fuel pump engage when turn key on. Pulled a plug and I have spark. Shot starter fluid in intake and it started then of course died. Pulled fuel line from fuel filter on both ends, tried to start, no fuel pumping out. So can my fuel pump be bad even tho I hear it run? I might add that when the car is cold no matter the temp or time of day, if I don't give it gas a couple times before putting it in drive, it will choke and try to die when trying to drive off. This started a little over year ago. Took into Volvo to replace timing belt and told them about it, they charged me another $2500 to drop oil pan and replace a sensor. After getting car back, it still chokes if I don't give it gas before putting in drive.

Could you identify which engine you have? I think 2005 had three available (I5, I6 and V8). What is your mileage?

Yes the fuel pump could be the issue even though it appears to be working.

Do you have a fuel pressure gauge? You need to check actual pressure at the rail to see how the pump is working.

The pump can run and not build sufficient pressure. What you are experiencing fits this type of failure.

At those miles the pump has done well. Two options, 1) change the pump and filter and bet you made the proper diagnosis or 2) get a fuel pressure measurement.

As far as I know there are no sensors in the oil pan of your car. So I don’t know what the dealer did and charged you for.

Repair only with used parts this time, it will get too expensive otherwise (can get parts off Ebay)

There are fuel pressure sensors that go bad (FPS) and also fuel pump controllers (PEM) - google up a bit. All cheap used off Ebay or on sites such as fcp, ipd. The fuel pump is solid on this car but you never know, maybe it was already replaced with some aftermarket part. If replacing, keep away the old one. Again, get used parts, or it will cost too much to guess.

..Running fine/no issues then seconds later died with no fuel pressure. The pump runs (obvious buzz/whine that sounds normal?) but zero flow from the hose at the inlet of the fuel filter. Sounds like one of the hoses on the pump assembly inside the tank broke or came loose. Depending which one, either the pump is sucking air or the fuel is spraying back out into the tank instead of out to the filter/engine. My vote is the pressure hose that jumps between the pump outlet to the top plate (and out to the filter/engine).

No pressure at rail. Was bone dry.

Replaced PCV Box said possible pan was clogged, replaced boost pressure sensor
