Intermittent Position Light Warning

Post by a3inverter »

All,

Recent weirdness related to lights on my 2006 V70.

Got the Position Light warning the other day and sure enough, the left license plate light was out. Gave the trunklid a quick rap and it came back on, and the Position Light warning went out. Later in the same drive, the warning came back on again and the lic plate light was out again. The behavior of the warning light was weird...flickers on and off, along with the triangle warning light. Not any sort of pattern or rhythm, just on and off randomly every 2-4 seconds. Checked out the bulb and sure enough it was burnt out now. Replaced it this morning with a Sylvania 2825 and it's working great...

...except that the warning light on the dash is behaving the very same way. I even watched both the lic plate light and the warning light to see if they flickered with the same pattern. Nope, the lic plate light is steady and solidly on, while the warning light does its thing.

Any thoughts?

The license plate light isn't monitored. You shouldn't see a warning from it to begin with. So it's likely something else of which the license plate light could be just another symptome.

OK. I was just out looking again and the left tail light is flaky (a rap fixes it). Looks tough to replace/clean up the contacts!

Not a tough job - just get a 10mm deep socket and try not to drop the bolts. A magnet helps. If you don't mind the added expense change all the bulbs while you are in there.

If the warning was being caused by the tail lamp, then license place light and the tail light are both flickering in sync. If whacking the trunk "fixes" the tail lamp too (warning goes away), that sounds like you have an underlying electrical harness issue somewhere. Rapid irregular on and off power cycling of the bulbs will blow them quickly (to say nothing of whatever else it's doing to the car).
