2000 XC Dipstick smoke

Post by FlyingVolvo »

2000 V70XC - 270,000 miles
PCV system fully replaced January 2017 w/ Genuine Volvo and passed "glove test" perfectly afterward.

Hello all, I was investigating the source of a bunch of oil in my intake system, when Justin recommended I also do a dipstick check. To my surprise, it filled a glove, and there was definitely some smoke coming out.

After some poking around, I found the hose in the pic below broken. I'm thinking of taking off the intake to try and just replace it with silicone instead of buying a whole new hose assembly.

My main question is, do you think this one little hose being detached would cause the pressure and smoke out of the dipstick? I only ask because the diameter of the actual plastic tube inside is smaller than a straw.

Trying to nip this in the butt quickly before it causes other issues. :(

It’s more likely the block ports are plugged

I think the smallhard hose only vacuums the PCV box at idle speed, though. You have to fix it so worth a try.

Damn. I use Liqui Moly 5W-40 oil, so not exactly bad stuff. I'd be surprised if my ports were plugged after relatively so little time and so few miles. Thanks though, I'll check it out for sure.

In the meantime, I can keep the dipstick out about half an inch to help relieve pressure right?

Don't use silicone, use fuel hose. It will work better for oil vapors.

And not sure how your PVC system is, but us 850 guys have learned mods using 5/8" fuel hose that maybe you could adapt. Old engines with turbos have more crank case pressure than what OEM setup was for.

Interesting. I'll look into that as well. I think the current plan is to take it all apart, fix the small hose, clean anything that looks weird, and see what happens.

The dipstick sucked in very well at idle when I finished the PCV job last year. I hope my engine hasn't worn so much in that time, though I'm not exactly always easy on it.

Thanks for the advice.

Unfortunately I think I gave that part away last year to someone with the same issue from my old pipe. The 2000 engines are not as bad as the 98 and older as the PCV system uses bigger piping for the most part and is routed differently.

If you did the PCV last year can't think why it would be bad again this soon. Time for compression tests I think to eliminate the possibility of piston blow-by or leaking valve stems or bad valve.

Be extra careful around that banjo as it is plastic and is held in with a metal bolt. Easy to break

You should be able to just RTV a piece of fuel hose over the plastic on and hope fully connect it on both ends. A little loop would be ok to relieve stress.

I think I have a spare from my PCV job if it snaps off too close to attach - PM me if needed

Well, to my surprise, that little tiny straw-like hose really does some work. I re-used the straw and some new fuel line to create a new hose and got it hooked up today. Warmed up the car pretty well. No smoke out of the dipstick, and there was vacuum.

Small parts can be deceiving I suppose. I'll keep an eye on this one more in the future.
