High Fuel Consumption

I have Volvo V40, Year 2000 Model. Faults now include: High Fuel Consumption, Black Smoke or Carbon Smoke, Engine Stops and picks, Engine dulls, too sluggish to move. Mechanic suspects Exhaust Sensors.
Please I need your help Sirs.
