I am just starting my second week of ownership

So far on my 2010 S80 3.2 I've replaced

5. ATF fluid flushed - did a drain and fill of 4 quarts of AISIN T-IV
7. Spark Plugs - it was time for these to be changed
10. O-Rings for Vacuum pump
Engine Air Filter
Engine Oil and Oil filter
headlight bulbs

Items on my list

I) Anti-Drain back valve in oil canister housing failure (need to buy the parts) - previous owner disabled the bypass valve in the cover due to low oil pressure but the root cause is the anti drain valve
A) Thermostat – (Part ordered)
3. Coolant replaced - (need to order coolant)
1. Serpentine belt, tensioner, idler (Parts ordered)
6. Power steering fluid and reservoir (I have the fluid, I may just do a flush)
D) Engine mounts (Parts ordered)
B) Fuel pressure sending unit (I bought the part, just in case now that I have two 3.2's I need some parts like this)

Here is the list that I am working from

AWD marked with AWD - FWD 3.2's can ignore AWD items

High Mileage Maintenance items for 3.2
1. Serpentine belt, tensioner, idler - replaced mine at 113,000 miles/10 years
2. Brake fluid flushed (every 3 years) Volvo recommendation?
3. Coolant replaced (failure is oil or ATF heat exchanger internal leaks)
4. AWD Rear differential oil change (every 50,000 miles) – I added a magnetic drain plug (LR2 and S80 V8 seem to be more susceptible to pinion bearing failure due to lack of maintenance)
5. ATF fluid flushed - search for Gibbons method (note: I used the modified Gibbons method)
6. Power steering fluid and reservoir replaced due to noisy heavy steering
7. Spark Plugs - replaced mine twice (every 50,000 miles, Volvo recommends 75,000 miles)
8. AWD BOT Gear oil for power Transfer unit (for mine I drilled a drain hole)
9. Battery – every 4 to 8 years (Low voltage while starting causes electrical gremlins on LR2)
10. O-Rings for Vacuum pump (~10 years or sooner if the leak is large)
11. AWD Haldex fluid and filter - I used genuine Volvo parts for this (it was cheaper than Land Rover)
12. AWD Replace CV joint grease in drive shaft joint near catalytic converter

Typical repairs for high mileage 3.2
A) Thermostat – replaced mine at 10 years (also replaced two coolant hoses)
B) Fuel pressure sending unit
C) PCV valve – replaced mine at 113,000 miles
D) Engine mounts
E) AC Compressor clutch pack
F) Ignition coils (Some evidence that a failed Thermostat leads to overheating and premature Coil failure)
G) Radiator Fan
H) Wheel Bearings
I) Anti-Drain back valve in oil canister housing failure

Less common repairs
I. Starter motor - typically fails at 100,000 miles or 10 years (not common on XC70)
II. Blower Resistor (not common on XC70)
III. Front Brake calipers refurbished (only if your aggressive with the brakes)
IV. Loose bolt on alternator pulley
V. Overdrive clutch pulley Alternator
VI. Overdrive clutch pulley READ drive

Take care

Paul

Wow! He's got a beauty! June
June,

Thanks for saying that.

Cosmetically this car is in excellent shape, inside and out.

Mechanically the previous owner was clueless.

Broken motor mount - not fixed

Spark plugs - not changed

Leaking Brake booster - not repaired

ATF - looked like it had never been changed

Broken anti drain valve in oil housing - not fixed, instead the pressure relief valve was removed from the filter cover

Its not a big deal the S80 is in good hands now

I expect to take her to >200,000 miles and beyond 2026 without a major repair

Take care

Paul

None of that sounds bad for a 12 year old car. The real benefit is you will never have to say "If only he had been in a Volvo!". I personally have stepped out of two mangled Volvos without a scratch. A 1998 S90 and a 2002 S80 which was a rollover wreck at interstate speed. I bought my daughter a 2007 C70 for her first car. I like the peace of mind that gives me. June

My Volvo cars owned
1989 740 GLT ordered
1994 850 4door standard shift ordered
1996 960 ordered
1998 S90 ordered totalled after 3 weeks
1998 V70 GT dealer stock car
2002 S80 T6 ordered totalled
2004 S80 T6 dealer stock car and current car owned

June,

Your point is well made

This is an extremely safe car.

I will fix the problems at minimal cost and a few hours of my time.

I do want to share to warn others what to look for.

I’ll make separate posts with more information as I complete the repairs

Take care

Paul
