Steam from Grill

Post by Mattbchillin »

It was 24 degrees F this morning and after getting to work 30 minute back country drive there was steam coming out of the grill and up over the hood. Is this normal because I have never seen this before on any of my cars in the past. I know the XC90 sits differently so it might be normal but sure freaked me out.

Yikes. Usually that indicates a coolant leak. Any lights come on the dash or temp gauge in red?

Whatever the case, watch the temp gauge on the way home. Don't wait for a message in the Message display. Pull over if it's going up past normal.

No lights on dash, All fluids are fine. I was talking to a guy at work with a big chevy truck and mentioned this and he stated he has seen steam coming from his grill after cold wet morning commutes.

I REALLY hope I don't need to change the radiator :(

Check radiator hoses, good chance one is loose or punctured. Next time it happens, pop the hood being careful of the steam, and look for where it's coming from. Radiators fail around seams, hose stems and corners... near the top if it's being helpful.
