2008 V70 vibration/wobble

Post by Viljam » Fri Nov 02, 2018 9:38 am

Hi everybody!

I'm writing to you from Estonia. Problem is my V70 2008, diesel 120kw, 350 000km.

I can't find the problem, why my car is vibrating in the body. I feel it if I drive 40km/h and 110km/h in same way. No difference if I accelerating or braking, no difference if I turn left or right. It's there all the time. But no vibration in the steering wheel, so this give me the picture, that its from rear axle. Its annoying and always there

What I have done;
Replaced front axles, left and right, OEM
Replaced rear brake rotors and brake pads.
Replaced rear shocks
Changed many set's of tires and wheels
Aligned many times front and rear axle
Replaced power steering rack
Replaced both rear axle bearings
Replaced bushes in the front axle

Been at the official dealers, at the different mechanics but no result.

What I learned? If I replace brake pads, vibration is disappear for about 400-500km and then its all back again. If I lift the car up, then after immediate driving, for a while, vibration is gone.

Is anybody have some suggestions, what it could be?

Thank you!
Viljam

So it's the whole car vibrating, not just the steering wheel

When you replace the pads, you have to lift the car so same scenario as when you mention lifting the car

My guess goes for the engine mounts. Diesel engines are very prone to bad mounts - some of these are vacuum type. Careful with the brands - best advice is to ask on this forum https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/forumdisplay.php?f=112

It is from U.K. and they have many diesel engines and engine mount is normal discussion

Otherwise, maybe an issue with wheel bearing, but you will get noise. Much less probable.

If AWD may as well suspect the AWD system, but again, less probable.

Thank you for quick answer!

I have FWD model. Even if I shut the engine down and switch to N (automatic gearbox) on the highway speed, its still wobble. I was thinking also engine mounts, but when engine is shut down, should be fine.... But not.

I don't feel anything on steering wheel, more at the back of car.

Anything could be wrong with the rear suspension arms, a failed bushing or even a cracked arm ?
I guess you have already looked at the handbrake shoes inside the rear brake drum. Maybe the cable is sticking?
Front/rear wheels warm up much when driving?

Hi,

Wheels are not warming up, temperature is the same on each wheel. I have checked handbrake also, had even disconnected handbrake system, but no effect.

Mechanics are checked the bushings also, but I can look again.

Maybe a cracked rear control arm or trailing bar. Not unheard, the crack may not be that large.

I will look cracks on next week.

Is it really possible, that the rod or bar are cracked? Is it visiable somehow?

Thank you!

Hi,

I lifted up car and carefully checked if there any cracks or damages. Also checked tires and wheels again, didn't see any problems. No problems...

I were wondering, is my car equipped with some brake pressure sensor for the reason if there load in the trunk, than rear brakes are braking more? Maybe this sensor is faulty? Do anybody knows? Is made the picture of some suspicious item on the axle.

Or anybody have any other ideas?

Thank you!

I'm chasing a similar vibration in my xc70. It's hardly noticeable, but once you notice it, you can't un-notice it.

-replaced tires and wheels (I have a second winter wheelset)
-replaced rear shocks
-replaced front rotors
-one rear wheel bearing

keep us informed if you find a solution!

Check the front bushings on the rear trailing arm. They are known to separate and cause noise and wobbles.
