Volvo Repair Database ECC fault code --updated

Post by steve »

First a brief history: The fault lights began blinking several years ago. I did not retrive the codes. About 6 months ago the blower fan stopped working after about a year of the blower making whining noises. I replaced the blower motor and resistor module. I reset the codes by disconnecting the battery while doing the R&R. Afterwards the fan worked great and still does.

Now the dreded lights have begun blinking again. I perceive no problem with the blower. I do notice however that the ECC has not been able to keep the temperature controlled the way it should, like it did when new. For example when new, if you set the temp at 72 deg. that is exactly where it was maintained. Now, it might give you 72 for a while but will periodically freeze or bake you depending on which way the wind was blowing that day. I figure a stuck or malfunctioning blend door.

Anyhow, today I read the codes: 211, 321, 322,325,414,417,418.

I need to identify these codes and get guidance to remedy them.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks, Bill of Durham.

How much of the downloadable service manual at the top of the forum applies to 1993 models?? I am in the process of consulting it even though it is for 1995 models.

Has anyone ever removed and cleaned or replaced the interior temp inlet fans and been able to successfully remedy the (414&417)codes??
Can they be accessed without breaking the trim? I vacuumed them without accessing them, for what it is worth.

How about the damper motors? Has anyone replaced one and lived to tell about it??

If the ground circuit to the damper motors checks out, it is very possible the dampers are sticking causing 321,322,325. Has anyone ever been successfull in accessing them? how big of a job is it? can they be easily lubed?

If they are sticking, it would make sense of how the system is at times unable to control the cabin temp with any accuracy. Maybe exercising the air flow control every now and then will cause them to be used and to maybe loosen or keep loose??

I cleared the codes and drove about 20 miles without any problems but when the codes return I want to be ready.

The temp sensor/fan motors above the doors are very easy. Click down the tabs on the grab handles to reveal the screws. Undo these and take the grab handles off, then you'll be able to see what's going on. The sensor/motor has a connector that you can take it loose from and then the entire contraption can come out for cleaning, lubing etc. That's all it might require.

I haven't checked all against the Haynes (1992 - 1996) but what I have seen appears to be suitable for most years of 850, only minor differences. Having said that, Haynes is not now the most accurate in my opinion. I have found several bad errors in this one.

I took out the passenger and drivers side temp inlet sensor and fan. Both were covered in lint in spite of a healthy vacuuming prior to removal which did not do the trick. The passenger side fan spun freely and works. the drivers side on the other hand works intermittantly to not at all. So I guess I need a new one. It did set a new 414 code on those occasions when it decided not to work.

With a strong light you can see whether the fan is working or not and can assess the cleanlyness of the unit through the plastic vent/opening without taking every thing apart.

I determined that when the ignitiion is turned to 'run' both fans should spin for about three to four seconds and then stop. Then, when you start the vehicle they spin endlessly or should anyway, until you turn off the ignition.

I am going to try to locate one, maybe two for good measure at the usual places, FCPGroton and etc. The Volvo dealer in Charlottesville Va wants $100.92 each. The left and right side units are different part numbers but same price.

I have contacted Erie by their e-mail parts request. I am waiting on a reply.

Has anyone ever been able to disassemble one of these little fan motors and actuually oil it with any sucess??.. without destroying it??

If I get a new part I am going to try some meatball surgery on the old one just to see.
