94' Volvo 855T Cold Start Issues

Post by henrysin44 »

Hey all, ive finally got my 850 fixed enough to be a daily driver again but I'm still having a few symptoms i'm abit stumped on.
On morning start ups it will idle at 1K-1,200 and if I don't wait for it to settle to its usual idle it drives like its drowning in fuel, if I wait it drives great. No codes set on OBD I or OBD II. To me it seems like a coolant sensor but I'll hear the radiator fan kick in during traffic.
Another odd idle related symptom I'm having is every once in awhile when stopped at a light the idle will bounce rapidly between 700-800 RPM for 2 seconds making a weird rapid thumping exhaust tone.
Daily driver Black 1994 Volvo 855 2.3L Turbo - manual swapped, turbo swapped, green injectors, custom M4.4 Tune, de-catted, custom two-tone interior, V70R seats & rims
Teal 1994 Volvo 855 2.5L N/A Manual Transmission (the back up daily and parts car) - Runs and Drives but the engine knocks
Silver 1997 Honda CRV 2.0 AWD - its in a very sorry condition, but drives
Silver 2003 Subaru Forester 2.5L N/A AWD - Leaks everything

Cleaning the IAC valve and throttle body stopped the two second low idle at lights on my '94.

Coolant temp sensor is a good suspect, so is a bad MAF (but I believe you just replaced that). IAC cleaning can also solve a lot of idle problems. Thumping exhaust points to a missfire.
