95 850 - No forward gears

Post by slayer7 »

Went out to drive the 850 yesterday and there's no forward gears, only goes in reverse. When putting it into D or any of the manual forward gears it acts like it's in neutral, doesn't catch or anything. Reverse seems to work fine. Played with the Economy/Sport/Winter switch, even disconnecting it, did nothing. Fluid is in proper range, a little dark but was changed about 20-30k ago. Any ideas?

Check both your axles are fully home. I made a mistake swapping an axle and it was not fully home. Lost all drive but no orange light. Mind you I would expect that to affect the reverse too, but never tried reverse at the time.

Without axles fully home he wouldn't have a reverse neither,Neil.

Thanks for the replies. The orange arrow is ON when in the manual 2 gear positions below D but not in Drive. Someone had also suggested that it might be a problem with the PNP switch so I followed the walkthrough here to remove, repair and replace it but unfortunately that didn't help either.

Ouch. Unless you pull the trans, the only market will be in the Bronx.

Others might know more about the relays inside the little box on the lower front of the transmission. It's kind of hard to get the cover off their housing, but apparently doable. The relays themselves I seem to recall are not expensive and fairly easy to change once you get access. I haven't tried it. Your symptoms do seem to suggest that might be your problem. If a relay gets power when you shift, but doesn't activate the clutches, then it's no go.

Abscate - your reply was both infuriating and hilarious at the same time.

Jimbee - I found a procedure to check the TCM for codes. I will try that to see if it indicates any trouble with the relays. I've been kinda wondering about an electrical issue since the thing was working just fine when parked and then the next day, suddenly wouldn't go into gear with no other warnings.

That’s a good sign slayer...If it went out real quickly I’m with you that’s it could just be an electrical issue.

Have you tried to press the WINTER button to see if it will start rolling in 3rd gear?
