Oil in my valley '04 V70 NA

Post by Faust »

This car is "new to me", so I know nothing of it's history. I did buy it from the original owner who allowed he "wasn't much for maintenance". 115K miles. I just got it home a few days ago. It required the immediate replacement of a coil, while I was at it I decided to replace the plugs. When I took off the cover, I noticed oil in the valley between the cams. This seemed to be mostly near the "rear" camshaft. As I pulled the plugs (I assume they were original), I noticed that 1-4 were saturated with oil.

Is this condition at all normal? Does it result from spill at the oil fill? Is there a cure?

It's quite possible it's from spilled oil, yes. So clean it up and check again in a little while as a first step before getting too worried.

I get this on top of my 1999. It comes from the oil filler cap, so you can try a new gasket to try reduce it. It helped a bit on mine. The best test is clean it off with paper towels, remove the plastic cover , and watch the top to see how the oil accumulates...if it starts at the middle front and works outwards it's the oil filler cap

Leave the cosmetic cover off, store it on your garage shelf.

Replace the oil cap Gasket.

An ethical question. When I cleaned out the console, I found three ladies Timexs and a Rolex. Do I keep the Rolex?

If you do, some gets your soul. You should know that.

Seriously, call the PO. Only good can come out of that.

Put it like this:

" what do you want me to do with these crappy old watches"

A Faustian bargain plays out right here on MVS!

Paramount point about the oil in the valley: given the history I would immediately suspect it is due at least in part to a clogged PCV, and do a glove test.

Not sure, the phrase simply sprang full blown in my mind, much like Venus from a Cypriot sea.
