Fixing Side Bolster Tears

Post by velorider »

It's pretty common on these cars to have the side bolster tear. I've been on the look out for decent seats from the Pick-Your-Parts in the area but haven't had much luck. So today before the situation gets out of hand I decided to attempt to stitch up the tear before it grows to large.

JoAnn Fabrics has curved upholstery needles and heavy duty yarn. So for about $6 in supplies I decided I couldn't make the situation any worse.

Some pointers if you attempt this:
* Pushing the needle through the leather is very difficult, you'll need the help of needle nose pliers.
* Push the needle into the seat so the needle exits toward the door, this gives a clean line from the most visible portion of the seat.
* It's take practice getting the needle to exit near the old stitches for a clean finish
* I placed a little glue on the knots on both ends to help prevent the knot from undoing
* You don't want to much thread tension otherwise the seat bulges
* [STEREO TYPE WARNING] Unless your mom, girlfriend, wife can teach you how to tie the knot to end/start you stitch search youtube.
* You can't reproduce the invisible factory stitch without removing the seat covers, so the your stuck with the Frankenstein'ed surgical stitches.
* Start well past where the tear starts and stitch into the tear and well past.

Good luck, I think it looks great compared to the seat tearing.

That high up you'll be fine but further down where the airbag sits there's been some discussion about strength of thread to use.

Are you sure there are airbags in the bolster? I'm taken other S60 seat down to the foam and have never seen an air bag in the seats. I've seen then under the roof liner.

Lower outer side, yes. Stuck in a compartment in the foam. Came with the 850 and it's the same in the P2s.

In P80s it is pretty high, I have a picture in my skin replacement thread. Same in P2s?

What thread did you use? I tried this with standard thread and broke it

I've really only seen it in ads where they show all the airbags expanded. I haven't taken the seat apart. But my understanding is that it protects the hip area since that's about where a regular car will hit you and the hip is a bad thing to crush.

I picked it up at Joann's Fabric. I couldn't break it with my hands while the other stuff I could.
