It is very doable. I have done it in a driveway. I am no super-mechanic by any means. The hard part for me was everything falling onto my face. Wear googles. Oil, road soil, rust, etc. Big mess and uncomfortable. Not a fun job by any means. Unlike many jobs where you can stand part time this is all below. At that time my biggest accomplishment was timing belt and components.\ and brakes to give you an idea of skill. That said... having now done almost every repair on a car... that was probably the most unpleasant. Just a thought...Maybe power-wash under body can only help.

I don’t like doing Big work like this under a set jack stands so I usually put another set in front under the subframe or setvthe car on lumber so I know it isn’t falling on me. I think I show a picture of this in my P2 thread on clutch R/R

Just did it myself. It was fairly easy but slightly time consuming.

You need plenty of jack stands/a floor jack/an engine hoist or something capable of holding the engine up while it is disconnected from the cross member.
