I'm a little confused with the suspension set up on the 2006 V70. I see complete lower front control arms offered, but I also see control arm bushings and replaceable ball joints. So, if I can replace the control arm bushings and ball joints, why (absent accident damage) would I ever need to replace the actual from lower control arms?

Because it’s a lot easier to buy the whole control arm with bushings as opposed to removing and pressing in new ones...and it’s not that simple. I was going to do it and install Powerflex bushings in the front position, however, the metal sleeve has to be pressed out which requires a hydraulic press of and probably a jig of sorts to accommodate the curvature of the front arm. Anyhow, a new arm, Lemforder of course, is not too expensive.

If you purchase genuine bushings and can have a garage press them in for you there is a big saving over the cost of a genuine control arm. Many garages press bushes in for the shade-tree mechanic for a few dollars.
I haven't replaced complete arms on any of our P2 vehicles. I have a small press that can handle the vertical V70/S60 bushings however it doesn't have the power for the XC90 bushings so I cut them out carefully with a hacksaw.

If you have under 120k miles the ball joints may still be good. Anyhow, go with the good brands as above. The bj is Lemforder.
