Opinions on accent paint for a platinum?

Post by Kara503 »

Working on my 855 platinum, currently chasing a water leak :P I've been thinking, I want a tertiary color to go with the plat and black colors. I want to go with a dark metallic red. I'd use a vinyl tape for the stripes so it is removable and wont damage the pearl paint.

I also couldn't quite get the spoiler colored, but I would do that red to match the striping I think.

Any thoughts, opinions or tweaks to my photoshopped concept below? Also posted an actual few pics of my platinum for fun! Her name is Alice :)

I hope this kind of post is allowed here. If not I can repost to the misc forum.

I think Alice's Glass is Looking fine. Those Platinum cars are nice but those R cars are slow in the month of June.

I think a clean 850 wagon is about the best looking daily driver I've had so wouldn't add anything at all. -Just my opinion.
That said, were I going to do this I wouldn't use a primary color because the contrast is too great to call it an accent. In fact the more subtle the better. A lighter accent color would look more tasteful IMHO. Using the silver wheel color would look more at home because it matched the wheels. I would also cut the width to half of what your stripe is.

I might buy a pint of the same pearl white and do a stripe in that. Laying colors with mica in them it's very difficult to match the hue at the same angle of observation so it would glow just enough differently from any given angle to be visible but disappear at times. With a sharp tape edge on the stripe you'd see it, but as an optical illusion kind of thing that would require a double-take to be sure you're actually seeing a stripe. Once the eye did focus on it it would be there. If you wanted to be sure it showed, a touch (read; very little) of flip-flop in the mix would make it pop without losing the now you see it now you don't effect. Oh, and if I did it I would stripe the glass too. Probably by removing the dark tint in the stripe area and re-tinting the stripe with the next closest lighter tint.

I think this could look really cool on that base color. I see greg's point about primary colors, but it does bring a certain 90's aesthetic to it that goes rather well with these cars. My dark blue one wouldn't take to it very well, but the platinum would.

Greg- I absolutely love your idea. You're right, maybe it is a bit too much color. I was picturing frosted or etched glass with the layering you described. Thanks for the idea!! :)
I still really like the idea of there being red somewhere on the car, so maybe I will go for red calipers as well as some stuff on the inside of the car. I found some R- seats and my friend gave me the idea of trying to dye the boundary seam between the leather and Atacama a bright red.

Honestly, those stripes don´t go well with the the lines of the 850. Unless you get a mohawk, gold chains and change the base color to black.
The only factory striping they had were a thin line running just under the edge beween the lower window seal and the door handles ( a rare option).
Red calipers are only nice on Porsches. On ANY other car they look fake. Because they are. Like T5-R yellow on anything but a T5-R ...

That's a good idea for a subtle, red accent.

Red calipers look fake? How about that rear spoiler, isn't that whole thing pretty darn fake? It's all cosmetic, IMHO, just a matter of personal preference ...

I like red calipers. When I installed a big brake kit on one of mine I took advantage of the new parts' cleanliness and coated the parts in red before installation. I bought a pint of red ceramic paint. you can find it specifically for brakes. Not the best pic of brakes, but only one I had.

I wouldn't use R seats for a dye experiment though.
